One word for this novel - EPIC.

At the conclusion of World War II, British combat nurse Claire Randall goes to Scotland on a second honeymoon to get reacquainted with her husband Frank from whom she was separated during the long years of war shortly after they got married. She walks through ancient standing stones and is transported to 1743, to a world of warring Highland clans and an occupying British army with a sadistic captain. Her only hope for safety lies with Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior.

Claire and Jamie marry and what ensues is a remarkable story of love and heart-stopping adventure. Claire is torn between two men and two irreconcilable lives.

Outlander is the first in a series of eight huge books you won’t be able to put down. The author Diana Gabaldon is a masterful storyteller. Her descriptions are so vivid it’s easy to picture the world she describes. You’ll fall in love with the colorful characters. This series is now a show on HBO but do yourself a favor: read the books, don’t watch the show. They’re incomparable.
